Meat Facts...
on 08/26/2008 (1882 reads)

Did ya know that beef is the most consumed source of protein in America? Team meat is still in the lead!

Here are some other meat facts for the day courtesy of Scooter Bay:

  • A 1,000 pound Angus steer yields 465 pounds of retail beef cuts from a 600-pound carcass: 25% are steaks, 25% are roasts, 25% is burger and ground beef, 25% is lost due to fat, bone and shrinkage.
  • The beef you buy today is 27% leaner than it was 20 years ago.
  • You would have to consume five 8 oz. glasses of milk and three 4 oz. cans of tuna to get the same amount of zinc found in 3 oz. of beef.

Medieval Meat!
on 08/26/2008 (1946 reads)

Ever wonder what people ate in the Middle Ages? Well, so did I, so I looked it up.... (Plus now I'm one post closer to a free Meat-shirt!)

In the Middle Ages, the nobles and wealthy royalty got to eat the good stuff. But there were a range of meats available including venison, beef, pork, veal, goat, lamb, rabbit, hare, mutton, swans, herons and poultry.

The more exotic game birds included thrushes, starlings, blackbirds, quail, cuckoo, lark and peacocks.

Sounds delicious, no?

Roastin' Piggie
Posted by dirtykalb on 08/25/2008 (2803 reads)

Let's face it folks, the other white meat is NOT Larry Bird. It's pork! But alas, good pork is kinda pinkish when it's cooked.
I give you The Proper Luau Inspired pig roasting technique of DOOM!

Roasted pig is always the main course at a Hawaiian luau. Pig roasts are also popular at many American cook outs, picnics, and public events as well. In order to prepare the pig the same way the natives do, you'll need to use an underground Imu pit.

Llama Ben Ein Berlinner!
Posted by dirtykalb on 08/25/2008 (1913 reads)

Llama - the other dark meat. After you get done ridin' your llama, be sure to head on over to Bob's butchering center. As guests of Jersey Bob's Llama Ranch, you'll be able to tour the entire slaughtering area. First, you'll want to check out the kill floor. You can watch Bob's employees stun, skin, and de-bone entire herds of llamas. Of course, the llamas feel no pain thanks to Bob's hi-tech machinery.
